Vandalism vs. totalitarianism

Today's featured story on the Williston Herald online was about vandalism in the form of spray paint targeting Harmon Park as well as some vehicles in town. Apparently the band shell and the skate park had been painted.

There seems to be a bigger story than the vandalism itself, and that is the shutting down of the skate park "indefinitely" until the park board can gather information on who is responsible.

I assume the band shell is shut down indefinitely as well! Correct?!

The bigger story seems to be why in the world would you shut down the skate park indefinitely unless the powers that be witnesses an individual on a skateboard spraying the paint? I'm sure this was not the case, and Mr. Grondahl is jumping to the conclusion that the responsible party is a punk skateboarder. Using this logic, I am just as certain that a piccolo carring flutist is responsible for tagging the band shell.

It is time for the park board, or maybe just the president to open their eyes and realize that people who skateboard or ride bicycles are not thugs and drug addicts. It seems to me that in the past few years skateboarders have been winning gold medals for their country (Shaun White in snowboarding) while being positive role models for countless children while the park boards beloved major league baseball "heros" have been testifying before congress regarding their useage of illegal substances.

Skateboarding is not a crime.
