RE: NEED A PLACE TO RENT!!!

That's great! I'm glad someone took the initiative to find some sort of housing for their employees.

Do you think VANOC will throw in a free curling rink?smile

True!  It's either being torn down in Vancouver as we speak or is on it's way.

I just read an article that the modular olympic village housing from the Vancouver Games may be coming to Williston to house oil field workers (Haliburton).

Here's the article I read: http://www.minotdailynews.com/page/content.detail/id/537569.html?nav=5010

Does anyone know is this is a go or not?

I have been looking into the Waters Edge project. These people are also know as CDI. They have 51 housing units going up behind the old McVay off of 5th and University. Our city sold them 4.77 acres for $185'000. They placed a mortgage on this property for $850 thousand. We assisted with getting them $315 thousand in block grants and another million and a half from NSP funding claiming the land was abandoned. (free money)

I have run checks on this company. Under their phone number they are known as Weeks Field Estates, Apple Creek, CDI, Waters Edge..The contracters have liens filed against the property at the Court House due to zero payment. I called Chris Collett in Idaho who seems to represent this group. He stated they are looking now for some sort of tax funding. I suspect it is a TIF bond issue through our city.

The depth of this goes into greater detail than I will pass on.

This housing is not to be a high rent. I want to see it get back on track. I have given all my findings over to a couple lawyers and it appears we may get the 51 housing project back on task. (at least the building aspect)

I also spoke with a person who owns land. This person has a multi rental unit. This person was denied the ability to expand their rental by our city. The land owned is placed adjacent to the rental unit they already have. The rent charged is approx. $500/mo. I viewed the units. NICE. This person will approach the city one more time for permission. I will assist. If this individual is denied one more time the unit will be sold to one of those mega land lords. There has been a hold out here due to the outsider mega landlord wanting to double the rent.

We need to discourage the evictions that are done in an effort to increase rents. Our city is facing many problems in this course of activity.

I think it is also about trying to keep the people (snow birds and such) who come from Williston and the surrounding area, connected to the community and region. Many of them are still pretty well-heeled, and are willing to contribute to worthwhile efforts, and the Open-Houses were to encourage this through casual conversations, as well as to tell people what has been happening in Williston.

Somebody said, just the other day....'Williston is a good place to be from...but living there...is a whole 'nother thing.'   It is old news, but it has been my experience that people who grew up in Williston have the fondest of memories about being raised here, on so many levels. Of course as they got older, they could not wait to get out, because, there was, and is, not a lot to hold young adults here.  ...or bring them in for that matter.

That...is the gist of the problem.

It has been refreshing to me...one of the "old guys" to at least see a new generation of young, educated, and goal-oriented adults, who despite the dearth of social and cultural mores they have become accustomed to while getting an education and "seeing the world", coming back home to raise their families. I hope they take this place over....

Young upwardly mobile people (stealing an old cliche' here) need reasons to come, and stay...we are seriously lacking those things. I do not have the answer, but at least these "delegations" are trying...

If we, who live here, disagree with the approach, then we need to get cracking, get shaking, and get on the bandwagon for change....visibly, physically, financially, and otherwise.

I have a friend that just moved back to Williston for a fantastic job opportunity (not oil related), but due to the lack of appropriate housing she is forced to live with her parents. It might not seem like that bad of a situation, and I wouldn't mind living with my parents for maybe a month, but there is no way in hell I would move back to Williston without knowing if I'd be able to get into a house or even an apartment.

I really don't know how the elected officials are dealing with the problem, but if they want people to move to Williston there should be a place for people to live. You can't expect everyone coming to Williston to have a family they can move in with obviously.

I posted a reply on the Herald Guestbook but I don't believe they put it out there.  It really is a matter of priorities.  If your goals are all about growth, you better have a place to put everyone.  Curious to see where the next 1500 people that are expected to come to Williston will go.

Has anyone checked out the new housing accross from Public Works?  I think they might be a part of low income housing, not sure about this or who to contact.  I hear from the workers that they are very nice.

We drove by those townhouses today. They were filling them with furniture. They have no smoking signs on the doors and card swipers. It looks like they will be using them like a hotel.

Yeah, my daughter has a friend who lives over there.  Her parents were very distraught over this.  They told me they were given 3 months.  But they are struggling to find another house to rent.

People are now getting kicked out of the Town houses build last year over by the baseball diamonds, that were renting them when the builder couldnt sell them. They were told to be out in 30 days, that they had other plans for them.
