I think that Zak informed us all the victim was Nigerian is relevant because it lets us all know he/she was probably not local and may not have been as familiar with the depth of Blacktail.
When people refer to me as a boy from ND I don't get all bent out of shape.

He WAS a nigerian kid. Why is wrong to say that and not wrong to say "a kid from nigeria"?? I thought "nigeria" information was needed when no name was given. It pretty much told me that it was no one that I knew.
Thank you for the information and there was nothing wrong with the way it was stated :)
Carnell I think what she was stating was not only referred to in this particular topic but in every day life with people using terms, not neccessarily meant to be hurtful, but end up to be with certain people. And Zack I know you were just trying to give as much info as you could at that time, all I am saying is I know what she is referring too.....and should probably be discussed in a differnt thread if needed. All in all very sad situation.
Uggh...are we really this sensitive here? He's from Nigeria and compared to Zach he IS a kid. It's not like he called him something demeaning. And Shayla wasn't pointing a finger at Zach and scolding him for anything just issuing a little "be careful how you word things on this board" because things certainly can be taken out of context.
That being said...it's very sad that this individual that originally resided from the country Nigeria was not shown how to properly wear a life jacket thus perishing in a North Dakota water recreation area. I will pray for him and his family.
Steve

That would have been a better term. However, I never use the term "20 year old male" in my vocabulary or everyday grammar so that term didnt pop into my head. The words I chose were the closest and best way that I came up with, in the 2 minutes I had to give what little information I had, about what had happened at Blacktail.
Why is this an issue? Does it matter? He was a kid. He was from Nigeria. That's all that was said. Why does this offend anyone? There's nothing offensive about how it was stated. Sheeesh.
I agree Shayla, but no term really would have been any better. I did not mean to be demeaning or seem not to care. Fact is, I didnt know this person, I didnt know his name, but I knew his age. I also believe that there is not really a term that would have fit. Boy, child, son, daughter, kid, are all pretty much along the same lines.
Why did you refer to him with any term besides a 20 year old male?

It was a nigerian kid who was up here doing an internship for one of the oil companies. He jumped off the dock, not knowing how to smim, with a lifejacket in his hand rather than strapped on. Life jacket slipped out of his hand and he went down. A couple people tried to locate him under the water but were unsuccessfull.
