As my final 2.5 weeks of internship approach up here in the grand state of Alaska I've been reflecting on all of the wonderful things I've seen and experienced, from the midnight sun, the endless amount of glaciers, the inspirational wildlife, mosquitos that rival the homegrown ones in Williston, to the amazing patients I have had the opportunity to befriend. This last weekend the governor of the state threw 2 community picinics dubbed as "The Governor's picinic".
Food, beverages, and entertainment were all paid for using some surplus taxpayer funds, and all community members and visitors were invited to come down to the park for the "free" food and fellowship. The governor and members of her administration were on hand to greet, chat, and answer questions with the people they serve.
It was an incredible event and it got me thinking about my home town. Williston is such a tight-knit community and small enough were I think this sort of event would really be a great idea. With the size of the town, it might even be possible to have not only the mayor, but have the park board members and the school board members etc. on hand and available to answer questions. What do you guys think? It seems like a wonderful way to invite the community together in one setting to meet and chat with their elected leaders.
