Unions

I will and thank you.  Although, I am one, to really have to have a open mind.  Williston School's, as good as they are, sometimes are really not so good.  History gets in the way.   And sometimes letting it go  - is not something I do.

If you really want to see another side to unions, specifically teacher unions, order "Waiting for Superman" from Netflix.  Excellent documentary.  I'm not the type to sit and watch documentaries but a friend recommended this to me, and I'm very happy I watched it.

I feel no you are not.  Union's are a mighty force.  They get their money from the employee's, they really do not like  it, if you quit them, they want their dues and power.  Free Will or Union's?  I feel Union's have their place, if needed.  I will not allow a union ever to rule my life.  I like Free Will and will treat my people that work for me the same.  Some  People have been not so good - other's very good.  Free will does not mean bog your employer down with your problems and baggage.  I always told my family and schools never to call my office, unless my child was hurt or sick or some one died - or they needed me to take them to hosp. because they were sick.  It worked pretty good for me.  Our government backed Union's in the Auto makers mess.. our government is a problem as well.  And we as a country cannot help every soul on this planet.

The fact that this country even has a term called "right to work states" is a shame.  Shouldn't it be clear, based on our free will, to enable a person to choose to work for a union or to not work for a union.  What am I not understanding about this "right to work" ideology?  In a country where we give illegal citizens the right to free health care, I'm thinking we should at least give citizens the right to decide ..... union versus non-union.  Am I wrong?

ND, how long does it take to fire a bad Union Employee?  When I worked for the Management  - you brought the union worker to the office - then you give them a Verbal warning - then you give them a Verbal Written Warning - then you actually give them a Warning.....And then the big boy's get behind them.  How many month's does this take and money?  This too takes along time.  I rather be in Management then Union any day of any week - unless forced to make that decision based on work and being pregnant.  That is now  a non factor.  And the Union's have enough money to tie it up in Courts.  And the Bad Union employee still get's paid.  Money wasted.  No different when you have a complaint in Right to Work States.(Now that has been many years - if I am wrong about that, let me know.)

So true ND, but why should the bad union employee get the same pay and right's as a good union employee?  The same Protection?

The work ethics of people now days is really going down the drain. They just dont want to work, and it is hurting the people who do want to work, with low wages (non oilfield jobs do not make rent payments right now for those who do not own their homes) and little benefits. Employers do not care and employees do not care they can just move on to the next business who will hire them. But we do need people to realize that not all employees are like that, and many do want to do their jobs well. Unfortunately these are the employees who get penalized when they start making too much money.

Of course, vacations included.  But, employees sometime want more than this.  Get paid one day - don't show up the next.  And can't figure out why you reprimand them.  This goes both ways.  Be a good employee and make sure your working for a good employer. Also, cell phones have become a big problem and irritating.  Some people just don't get it.confuse

Why would you have to be worried?  Job Service and other ND Services will take care of your complaint.  Do your job, no personal phone calls unless an emergency, no taking off time  - unless giving birth or family emergency.  All you have to do is make a complaint.  ND is all over them..  Just better have your ducks all in a row.    And the Boss with the Bad Day better too.

People are not supose to take vacations? If I ever worked for a company that only wanted me to take time off for giving birth or family emergency then I would have to think twice about working for that company.

Regardless, Even when an employee does have all of his/her ducks in a row, and are fired, they still have to wait on the ruling of the state agencies. We were told 6 months to review, then they would make a decision and the employer would then be sent a letter that they need to pay out.

Unfortunately, it's very normal to live under the conditions of being fired for "anything".  That's life.  As I told my daughter who just had an interview in which she was very qualified for the position.  She was comparing her skills to the others who had interviewed.  Feeling like I'm in the middle of an Andy Griffith episode, I told her "life isn't always fair".  If the boss is having a bad day and he fires you.  That's a tough situation.  But it's real, and it's not fair.  The problem comes into play when our human side wants everything to be fair.. hence the unions.  Unions play on our human emotional vulnerability.  That's the unions single ace in the hole.  And that's why they still exist.  If you want more security, you really need to start your own business and be your own boss.  Otherwise, you need to gain skills to which you are in high demand.

As an IBMer, eventually my job is likely to transfer to India.  And no, I'm not moving to India.  So there are pretty good chances that I will be layed off in the near future.  Unless I change my skill set and become valuable to IBM doing things that require other skills.   If I do get layed off, perhaps I'll move to Williston smile.gif .  But for now I live with the possibility of my job transferring to India.  I'm currently training India folks to do my job.  Is that fair?  I can choose to do a poor job in training in order to save my job.  However, seeing the inevitable comes to reality too clearly.  So I might as well do the best I can in training so I can continue to obtain good performance reviews from IBM.  That's the nature of things.. and more now days then ever  with all the global outsourcing happening today.  I can only hope that the new skills I'm obtaining will help me sustain a job at IBM.

I look at the other side of the coin too. The right to work states (like ND) give employers the right to fire employees for no reason, other than the boss is having a bad day. This isnt something that employees should not have to be fearful of.

Steve - any one that is in any Union, will not say a word.  I crossed a Union  Block once.  It was ugly,  They were on foot - I had a job to do - I was in a car.  It was then after my baby was born - enough.  Policy in place.  Thank God I just drove a big old ugly car.  Pretty rusty at the Salt Plant.  From the Salt Plant to BN Transport - another Union.  Ugly.  Then Back to Hardy Salt to Management..  To this day I do not get it.  No Union will ever Controll my life without my say so.  When I have a job to do - I do it.  And no Union or person will get in my way.  That is the Ugly about union's.  But the Union member's were pretty thankful - when I was in my job - When they lost a finger -  hosp - and driving the finger to hosp.  Or when the boiler's blew - and I helped them - because they did not know what hit them.  I was in Management then.  Good education in your early 20's.    But when you need a job you need a job.cry  And there are the Union's.evileye

In my world, yes you are.  In 1975, Hardy Salt Com.  Union and Management.  I was in Management.  1977 got pregnant - the Manager said they would have to let me go, as they had no plan for pregnant woman working.  1978 I joined the Union to protect my job, Cy Long signed me up and carried a picture of Jimmy Hoffa in his briefcase, as he was missing.  We met - he scared the crap out of me - signed me up - Hardy Salt was forced to make a policy.  Although they protected me at that point, the Union is no picnic.

Now that's out of the way....let's discuss.

I personally think the union states (not the right-to-work states) are part of the countries problem as far as overall production.  If I'm prone to being lazy and I'm protected by one of these might unions, what incentive do I have to continue to work hard and improve myself if I know I can get away with merely coasting to retirement?

I personally like the idea of a "right-to-work" state.  The union can exist but cannot force workers to be part of the union.  In other words, if I want to pay some sort of fee for being part of the union and get some kind of work protection, I have the option.

Am I on the right track with that line of thinking?
