I just finished reading: Sitting Bull, Life and Times of an American Patriot by Robert Utley and I just wanted to recommend the book to anyone who is interested in North Dakota / upper midwestern history.
The book chronicles Sitting Bull's life from birth through his stuggles with the American and Canadian government, and ends with his unfortunate death at the hands/weapons of his own people (sanctioned as police officers for the American government).
What I really like about the book is that you get a great feel for the man and persona of Sitting Bull. There is only one chapter that covers the Battle at Little Bighorn, which was refreshing as almost all of my schooling on the man focused entirely on that specific time in Sitting Bull's life.
I also very much enjoyed reading about the land that spans roughly from Ft. Peck eastward to Ft. Buford as it was like I was at home. I could almost smell the grass and feel the wind radiating off the Missouri.
