If you're going to have a public life, occupation, or especially an elected/appointed public office position you have to be prepaired for criticism, even if its spiteful, critical, or just plain ludicrous. The same can be said for posting your words on a public forum or discussion board.
That being said, "playing nice" extends beyond the sandbox.
Has anyone heard what the status is of the mural....I did see a letter from Joe McCann containing some explanation, but is there more?

ahhhhh.....civil discourse. bohdan does have it correct insofar as that in order to serve the public....you are gonna have to have thick skin...it comes with the territory of leadership. If you don't naturally have one, then you are gonna have to at least pretend that you do until you actually get all calloused over. If you ever read Mad Magazine...there is a feature called the Shadow Knows....it has served me well in a number of heated meetings where everything but the kitchen sink was thrown...mostly at me...

Shayla, when your personal attack happened I jumped all over it. Several of us certainly took exception to those comments and you eventually got an apology.

I left my self wide open, i gave a very vague opnion about the mural. That is leaving me open about a project at my job that I am working to help get done.
I project and a topic in which I have no doubt the I am in the top 1% of the community when it comes to knowledge about. And from your comments, I would say that you are a lot closer to the bottom 1%. If you really want a complete story call me.

This is two totally seperate issues. I am an outsider looking in at the mural. I am not afraid of change but I am also not a WSC graduate or even a life long resident. I do not have an emotional interest in the mural. I really have not decided how I feel about it.
I have a professional interest in the playground. It is my job.
SKM are you a member of the commuity builders? I have been attending meetings for over a year. I believe I have missed two meetings. One I could not get away from the office and the other I was in Bismarck taking a course and passing a test to be a certified playground safety inspector. ( I have been certified for 3 years).
If you want Parks and Recreation's Side of the story please call me my number is 577-5141. Have you talked to anybody at parks and recreation about the playground? Have you done any research? Or do you just comment without getting all of the facts.

I wonder who this guy is to come in and says what stays and what goes? I find it hard to believe this should even be an issue. That wall should stay the way it is. Nuff said.
yep..its all going. I used to love going down University Hill and looking out and seeing the big white rocks that spelled UNDW. That was special and made me proud to be from Williston. Its sad to see things go. I know I was soooo sad to see that the High School changed the color of the lockers. My son is sooo excited about being a Coyote next year. But yet where is the school spirit? Sigh...
Great Article in the Hearld written by Alta Mayhugh, Pretty much tells it like it is regarding the "great White Wash at WSC".
I attended UND Williston in 1968 and find Dr. McCann aversion to "dove white" a slamp to the people of williston and the surrounding area. A placemat image of the Mural for sale in the bookstore is not the answer.
Maybe a call to 701-774-4200 insisting the college preserve the history would be in order. I know its not up there with "not renewing E-verify, illegal immigration and massive bail outs of IDIOTS like AIG" but its along the same lines of bad plan, No plan and destroying something that commerates people, times and events that are the foundation of the community and college..
At the college on the west wall in the cafeteria is a mural that was painted 25 years ago by Sharon Moline.
Well Dr McCann the president of WSC who is leaving in April, has made the decision to paint over the top of the mural. On this mural is a picture of coaches and players walking into the gym 30 years ago on Mar 17 with the 3rd place in the NJCAA trophy. Also a picture of Shelly Hughes All American, students, all the programs offered at the college, welding, rodeo, cheerleading, you name it. This wall depicts the history of UND=Williston and includes the people who made that college what it is today. Phill Rabon and Al Bervig are on that wall. It is awesome and now he wants to earase the history of that school because the paint is fading, it gives the college an old look, and the students don't relate to what is on the wall.
Well touch up the paint, paint the New History on the south wall, and then put plaques under the pictures SO the students DO know who they are and what they represent. What is the purpose of this Antic ? Could it be a parting shot on the way out ? or is it a OSHA saftey issue ?
