oops..you're right. My mindset is "Class of 89". Sorry bout that. I do remember watching those guys though. Like I said, almost Montana to Rice SuperTechmobowl-ish.

1989 was ground and pound baby! Ground and pound!!
Wasn't the Bakken to Engebretson SuperTechmo looking offense in 1991?
Heh, too bad they weren't playing now. They could design an entire playset from a "Bakken" formation. buh dum bum...tsssshhhhh
No, they were definitely from 89, my senior year of football. It was Ben McIvor's senior year of football when he got hurt in the first game and Bakken came in as his replacement. They graduated in 91, and played their Senior year in 1990.
Not going to touch the whole Bakken "Play" on words.
I have 2 boys in Wrestling--Nelson is 7 (starting his 3rd Season) and Preston is 6(starting his 2nd season). The Dickinson Wrestling Club has been led by Rick Mellmer who was a champ back in the day, and at age 50+, he can still kick butt on the mat. All of his boys (Marc, Luke, Jake, & Eric) were great wrestlers. I remember WHS wrestling in the late 80's as my sister Michele was a cheerleader for them. So I asked some of my kids' coaches if they remembered Zubke, Tesoro, and Gary Schwan, and MAN, did that start a fire! I bet the blood pressure jumped up 30 points!I heard many many stories about meets between him and the WHS wrestlers. It was a good time to remember back in the day...I hope my boys continue with this. We've got 2 completely different types of boys--1 is meaty and tough and mean, but the other is thin and quick. There is never a lack of a wrestling ring on my living room floor. Might have to inquire about putting some mats on the floor (and the wall) of the rec room?
Another very good multi-sport athlete and a gi-normous one at that...Tyler Jangula. If you look at his initials close enough you might be able to see the letters B.E.A.S.T

You better throw Cory Engebretson (Eggcrackin) and Troy Bakken into that mix. They put on quite a show in the 1989 football season. Justin Winkler, as a swimmer and football player was also a great athlete.
You guys! This is great!! The names thrown out so far are impressive. But are they the greatest "all around athletes"? No disrespect to Zak Tesoro as he was an animal on the mat, but does this make him a great "athlete"? Could he have been a state champion cross-country runner or all-state football player? Could Ihmels have been an all-state football player or golf medalist (are golfers really even athletes)?
Guys like Charlie Eder who were "all WDA" or "all state" in multiple sports are the names I'm looking for.
How about Tom Standard (sorry if I'm spelling that wrong). Wasn't Harry Chapman quite the athlete at one time? Who's the gentleman that had a great athletic career here and went off to play basketball at Gonzaga University?
I know the Kuesters were all very good multi-sport athletes. From Todd down to Anne. How about the Clarks? Shelly? Todd? Actually, Todd was one of my childhood heroes. I just happen to hit one over the field 6 fence (outdoor hockey rink) in 6th grade and he nicknamed my homerun Casey after that.
Anymore?

I like this topic. This is a fun thread. But I can't believe it's gone this far without anyone mentioning Corey Ihmels. He won 3 state cross country championships and was a 6 time All American runner at Iowa State.
I also would second Mica's nomination of Ron Allard and Ben McIvor.
Here's a few more names from my approximate WHS era that haven't yet been mentioned: Mike Sailer (basketball), Charile Eder (basketball/football), Brian Melland (football), Chris Hermes (wrestling), Charlie Herr (wrestling), Chad Rodvold (javelin), Cory Collings (baseball), Rob Heen (track, cc), Ricky Waitman (wrestling) though Ricky is MUCH younger than me. ;) And I can't forget the OLD SCHOOL, I hear my uncle Mr. Larry Skaare (football/wrestling) was allegedly one of Williston's best athletes ever.
Good call Slette, however this is an impossible debate as the list is long. Pete Porinsh, Larry Skaare, Cliff Ling, Phil Jackson, Denny Hoffer (Pauls Bro), Bruce Iverson, Eddy Maisey, Bawdon Owan and Goodall all in the same class, Kevin Spooner deserves a mention as well. Ooh, forgot Mike Huss and Dave Hastings ( I think his first name was Dave) I've heard Knut and McPher mention this guy many times. And Mica is right, Kristi Anseth on the ladies side ranks right up there, as do Kim Skadeland, and anybody with the last name Hughes that played BB for Pat Hatlestad, a Hendrickson girl was a fine BB player as well. Probably guilty of many ommisions on this side of the category. Pat had some incredibly gifted and dedicated young ladies who piled up a number of championships. This is a fun topic, would love to hear from some old timers and see a more complete list of the lady coyotes. Pitch in folks!
Ron Allard? Runner up for Mr. Basketball for NoDak.... Ben McIvor? Great in ALL SPORTS!! As far as women go... how about Kristi Anseth playing basketball?
I actually remember lininig up AGAINST Jerry when he played in Dickinson. They were our biggest rival all through school. So you can imagine what my response was when he showed up in our locker room the first day of practice our senior year. And contrary to the prior experiences I had with him, he turned out to be a good guy afterall. No doubt, Jerry could run with the best of them. You gotta give some of that credit to the guys that were blocking for him...Chet McAdoo, Scott Vassen, Mike Stewart, Darby Heinart, Rod Paschke. Those were some pretty big dudes and prolly the biggest offensive line in the state that year. Kyle Carleson may have had the name but he was also one of the best if not THE best RB in the state in '89. He fared very well at NDSU too. Jerry is an engineer now living in Colorado and from what I hear he's done very well for his family.
The Kirchmeiers are all gifted in that they have athleticism but they are all also very smart (in every sense ). I think the Kirchmeier you're referring to is Derrick (sp). He ran Cross Country and Track and excelled in both. Unless there's something else about Chris "going the distance" that you would like to share with us.
No relation to John. I do remember him from the basketball team though and I think you're referring to Todd Clark.
Good stuff. Fun memories. Keep em comin'.

Jerry was an awesome football player and didn't get the field time or recognition he deserved while living in Dickinson. Jerry was my neighbor from 3rd grade until 10th grade when we moved back to Williston. It was a great surprise when he showed up in Williston two years later. I was so happy he got a chance to show what he could do on the field, even breaking a school record if I am correct. In Dickinson, Jerry had Chris Carlson to compete against for some play time, then Kyle was coming up the ranks. They were the sons of the coach at the time. I venture to guess you can figure out how that worked out. Anyone know where Jerry is now?

Hoffer would have had an even more decorated football career but didn't he break his collarbone one year?
Excellent call on that one. I forgot about him.

Slette, what about you guys? You had some outstanding athletes around you. Bowden. The Owen boys. The Kuesters. Class of 81 was athletic...period. I know because my brother told me...more than once...

Yep, Jerry was a good athlete. But he was only in Williston for one year and he only played football and ran track. He was an intelligent guy for not going to NDSU because he knew he would only be used as a tackling dummy. A kid by the name of Kyle Carlson was coming out of Dickinson (where Jerry came from) to run for the Thundering Herd that Jerry knew he'd never be able to compete with...whether it was because of the Carlson name or whether it was because Kyle was one of the fastest and stockiest kids in the state.
Regardless, whenever a kid from Williston runs for over 300 yards in one football game against Minot, he deserves to be mentioned in these kinds of discussion. Plus, he's a friend of ours...

Yes. Kirchmeier is man among little girls when it comes to athletics. Maybe Jerry Thorstad??? Great RB and like water when he went over a hurdle. Probably could have played more sports but sports weren't that important to him. He chose not to play football for the Bison. Right?
Granted, Enno was awesome to watch at the baseball field. What other sport did he play?

Gaylen, who would you say, besides Kirchmeier of course, was the most athletic in our class? Rodvold? Hanson?

Yes! That is completely irrellevant. Phelps couldn't hit a fastball with precision or consistentency, I doubt. Nor could a baseball player beat him in the pool. Tiger is unbeatable. Lets just leave it at that. Sometimes the media is just stupid.
Actually, I think what they really mean is that no other American athlete that has competed in Olympics has more medals. Therefore, he is the greatest. I know your frustration. It could have been stated more aprropriatley.

No, these guys talked about being able to hit 90 mph fastballs and compared him to Tiger Woods and everything. There's no doubt he was including all athletes in all sports.

Steve Powell was pretty good on a pair of crutches in between football and basketball. That's the only one that comes to mind though. (J/K Steve.)
Nah, my glory days came after high school on field 4.

A gentleman from the Today show this morning labeled Phelps the greatest "athlete" of our time. Unfortunately for my wife, she just happened to be in the room when he made the statement and had to listen to my little tyrade. I don't understand how one sport athletes can fall into this category. Guys like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Brian Jordan, etc...that have played several sports at a professional level, in my mind, should be the ones that should be placed on this pedestal.
So, on that note, in your mind who is the greatest athlete that has participated in sports as a Williston Coyote?
Is it Phil Jackson? Virgil Hill? Hennesey? Is there someone that was a state champion in every sport they took part in?
