well, as anyone knows, I HATE taxes, but back in the 80's when evreryone was living "high on the hog", Nobody thought, it would go bust! And it did! Lost homes, families had to move. And that is why taxes went up in town. Some one had to pay. And everyone did. If you think this "bakken plate" is going to last your kidding yourself. Oh, I have no doubt it is there but the EMT will find a endangered weed or something else to "protect" out there! So, when this whole thing goes bust, and it will, cause in the oilfield its feast or famine, the city should be putting some money away. RENT on every single appartmet has been raised!!! I find this vuglar!!! Not every family is equipt to pay the prices they are paying here!!! HOMES are cheaper in California then they are here! And, (just to vent) rockin the Bakken is (in my opnion) so stupid!!! Does it have to rhyme? If so then why not Shock thru Bakken? Or something? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, TY for just letting me vent .

Suppy & demand SKM, suppy & demand... Letting the market alone determine the cost of housing, food, fuel is what makes our society a capitalist country. Isn't this the sort of tax-free govenmental non-intervention you thrive upon?
I agree... "Rockin the Bakken" sounds like a slogan composed by C.C. Deville.

I'm not sure about the home situation in Cali being more affordable than Williston. I was visiting with friends a couple of summers ago in San Diego and they lived in a studio that was literally a one room apt. The only seperate room was a very tiny bathroom. They slept in their living room on a pull out bed. The edge of the bed, when pulled out, was about 2 inches from their 19 inch TV. Their rent was $2000./month. Amazing. Everything in Cali was at least 2 dollars more than any other place in the country. EVERYTHING. Milk, eggs, etc.

At this time I think it would be hard to say that the state government has taken an individuals "hard earned" money. A vast majority of the the surplus is from the oil and gas production taxes that is creating a "boom" for the state, and specifically the Williston region. To make sure that the government does not waste and squander the suprlus take a hard look at measure 1 for this fall's election. IT would require the state to establish a trust fund that would provide revenue for years and years to come, as well as have a mechanism to access the principle of the trust fund if needed in the future. This would setup the potential for the state to become more like Alaska with their Trust fund and the elimination of certian state taxes.
Now if we could just get the federal government to understand basic fiscal responsibility !
Even if you did have a job, what is MN's surplus? If there is one, wouldn't you wonder why the gov't needs to stash all that cash rather than give back what you rightfully earned?

Don't you guys feel like you're being robbed of your hard earned money somehow when you hear that the government has collected way more money than it needs?

So now this budget projection has surpassed 1.2 billion dollars? What gives? Shouldn't I be taxed less or given back more money?

hahahaha...i read that as (is there any "flipping" houses in williston yet) ??? hahahaha.......funny..cuz we're TRYING to find a new house...but no luck....
Ya right. We can only dream of getting a little more money back. I've been looking for an underhanded job so I can get paid "Under the table." Anyone know of any? Has there been anyone flipping houses in Williston? That would be something to consider with everyone moving in to to town. It's something that I think I would like to do someday. Just thinking out loud.
I've never claimed to be any kind of budget or tax genius nor am I anywhere close, but the above article has me questioning some things. With a surplus that will be pushing the 1 billion dollar mark, shouldn't we be seeing some more tax breaks? Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that we're working in a surplus, I'm not upset about that at all. But my hard earned money (or not ) is sitting out there in Uncle Sams account and not my own.
My understanding on the state's budget is that they budget 2 years in advance and since they don't have a crystal ball telling them that oil is going to go up to $130+ dollars it's hard to know what kind of surplus/defecit is coming. So now that we have this huge amount of money sitting out there, shouldn't I be getting some of my money back?
