Living here, you kinda have to learn to live with rumors. People have nothing better to do around here. I personally could care less what people say, as long as I can defend myself. People that actually know me, will know the truth and that's all that really matters.
Rumors are going to be around in every small town. I just feel like you have so much negativity towards Williston and North Dakota in general. Hicks, in-breds, uneducated, untraveled, racist, homophobic...come on now, really. If the "majority" of the people think that...great. It keeps the riff-raff out. I'm proud to live here.
If you read the post, it was a hypothetical question regarding the negative comments regarding the residents of San Fransico said earlier. I'm sorry if you saw some truth in the statment. Riff Raff? Who would that be? hmmmm
I read the post and I understood your "hypothetical question"; I was commenting on your, "From my experience, I see more truth in that statement". And for the record, the riff raff comment was made in general.
Jyl, I don't think you get how much this community means to us. I believe this board was set up to discuss what we (meaning us living here and those who have moved away from ND) think about what our local and state wide government is doing about certain issues. Yes, we also have threads that are for yacking and getting back in touch with one another but you don't have to visit those threads if you choose not to. This site has nothing to do with being Rep or Dem. I respect all ideas and yes, I may make my comments but it isn't personal. I think you tend to take things as an "attack". But that isn't the case. I got some great advise... it goes something like, ..."when you feel angry write it and then walk away for awhile, if it seems harsh, edit yourself, then post it. It's great advise and it works everytime. Slow your roll and your point will get across.

Jyl, stick to the point. Not everyone lets rumors slide so easily. Try to understand my point here. If I post without using my real name I have a certain amount of freedoms that those who have honed up to who they really are don't. If you let these kinds of freedoms get into the wrong hands, it could be nothing but trouble for a board like this and could cause the worthy people to leave thus working against what this board is for. Is this making sense to you?
I have no problem with people posting as anons but I give the benefit of the doubt more times than not to those who put real names out there. I'm no board dictator though so don't feel obligated to put the real names out there.

Well, I will agree with you that NM did respond very respectfully and kudos certainly for that. I'm sure JLV appreciated that kind of response as well.
However, we did state from the beginning that to post on message boards we have to be a little thick skinned...especially if you post anonymously. So I don't slap wrists as much when the anons are smacked a little.
Now, I did come to your defense somewhat with the elephants so I do take care of you guys that have put your neck out a little more.
The point of the board is to have civil debates and exchange information. But keep in mind, Jyl, that when you allow anons to post too freely they can take advantage of the board without anyone knowing who they are. In fact, I could come on as an anon and start spreading rumors about you without you knowing who I am. That wouldn't be fair to anyone on this board. Not easy being the moderator. So to be fair, I ask for compromise. Hopefully we can get back to the civil debates we've had in the recent past.

Jyl, I would rather opinions be expressed with words and have backing to them. Expressing an opinion, especially one as strong and accusational as the one in question, with a picture is pretty much setting EVERYONE for animosity accross the board and truly isn't healthy. In other words, I might be on a thread related to Williston sports and NM posts to it. So I HAVE to see NM'S opinion every frickin time he/she posts. I don't want to see his/her opinion every frickin time I'm on a post that's non-politics related. So he's/she's asking for a fight EVERY TIME HE/SHE POSTS.
So answer my question, is this healthy for this board?
Sorry, but my feeling was that this forum gave EVERYONE a chance to give their opinion. If you don't agree with one, state your case tastefully (don't resort to personal attacks and throw out accusations of drug abuse, and brainwashing.....etc) and move on. Those are not agruements, those are things people say when they DON'T have a good arguement. The only negative things I read were personal attacks against NM. He replied with an intelligent answer. Did I miss something? If you don't like hearing different perspectives on issues, what's the point of the board?

LOL...I find that funny. I consider us the educated ones. And I lived right out side Bakersfield! A lot of hicks, druggies, and oil field trash. At least here in good ol' North Dakota we're oil field CLASS.
Oil field CLASS? LOL that's funny! If reading the back of a beer can is education, there should be a cure for cancer here any day now.

Nice to see everyones opionions are respected........must be mostly Republicans posting. I guess it's Ok to have an opinion if it is the same as yours. I also really appreciated the stereotyping of San Fransico residents (my sister lives there)....WTF! What can I expect. So I guess it would be Ok if people from San Francisco said that the MAJORITY of people from the Midwest are uneducated, untraveled, racisist, homophobic, in-bred, hicks? In my experience, I see more truth in that statement!

Hi Jyl;
There is a whole world of difference between opinions and nastiness...and I think that our west coast poster is raising the bar to an even higher standard of mean spiritedness in using such hateful pictures. And if you felt it was me making a stereotypical statement regarding californios...that was not my intent. Rather, I was making a tongue-in-cheek statement. We met many very nice people there, and while I am pretty conservative, my wife tends to float lefterly....
;o)
A picture is no worse than accusing someone you don't know of doing drugs and offending everyone in the state of California. I'm not saying I agree with the picture, but at least he had a tasteful arguement to back it up without resulting to name calling.

Sorry, I just wanted to add one more of Mr. Moore's films to my list of great works I mentioned below, "Sicko". My wife is a physician so i've seen by proxy some of the negative effects that managed care and pharmaceuticals has had on the ease and accessibility of health care in this nation.

Smoked too much pot? No Smoke(d) crack? No Brainwashed by (liberal) professors? No, I have been educated by liberal, conservative, and everything in-between profs though. Completed grade 12? Yes Don't have enough to do besides check up on my old hometown? Maybe
Honestly though, I don't believe that Ralph Nader and Michael Moore are whackos. They are both excellent at their chosen professions. Mr. Nader is a great advocate for consumer safety, and I respect his work on the subject. Mr. Moore is excellent at persuasion documentary film making. Roger and Me as well as Bowling for Columbine were both excellent films, and of course "...911" is controversial, but I respect his work in atleast generating some conversation.
PS: I don't believe in Jesse the Body's way of governing, but I do agree with some of the Governator's policies, and he's a branded conservative.

I have family from Bishop and Bakersfield all the way down to Capistrano and San Diego. I know exactly what they think of North Dakotans. If you don't believe me, ask any of the Powells that view this message board.

Nader, You see? We already agree on something. It's a free country. Thus, I haven't used my board admin privies on your avatar. I'm kidding, of course. I wouldn't have done that anyways as I expect people to have an opinion here. But, if you're going to have such strong opinion on something, I really wish real names were used. Otherwise, it looks like your hiding behind something to prevent people from knowing what you really think.
Yep, the Katrina thing. I just about pee my pants from laughing when that gets brought up. Good one, thanks.
Man! IT'S GREAT TO BE HOME!!

Nader, ya think if our immigration policys were in place we might not have had the 911 tragedy, Moore is a FAT IDIOT who's got money and so full of crap its unreal. Thank Gawd there are only a few of you people who follow such a stupid moron.. Now, what do you think the solution is to people sneaking into our country illegally, Moore is a laughing stock, a good butt of jokes at parties. But then again, he's laughing all the way to the bank.. Kind of like all the people who will make money on "global warming".. sooooooooooooo funny
I'm going to be very honest with you here Nader, I don't appreciate your avatar one iota. I don't support everything Bush has done in his two terms, but there's NO WAY IN HELL any American laughed at 911 ESPECIALLY the President.
You're entitled to not appreciate anything, as this is a free country, if you can prove that you are a citizen at least. If it makes you feel better I can photoshop out the WTC towers and photoshop post Katrina New Orleans in instead.
?lt;/p>

For those of you that are making excuses for the people coming into the United States, ILLEGALY, since it is ILLEGAL, are you saying it's ok for them to do this? So what if it's a difficult process? IT'S STILL ILLEGAL!
So when I show up at your house when you're gone and steal everything you own, are you going to say, "that's ok"? I can give you an excuse for why I did it.
There's no difference, we've both broken the law. So let all the prisoners out, I'm sure there's some excuse for them too for whatever they did.

LOL...I knew a Lib would bring that up. What the hell....the Natives couldn't even get along. Or did you forget that? Your reaching for a broken limb. I have tons of friends who are Native Americans and they have no beefs! They work frickin hard for everything they have. They'd NEVER look for a hand out! So, please don't bring Native Americans into this issue. THEY'RE LEGAL. Were talking ILLEGAL here.
By the way I wasn't talking about the Native American's being "illegal", I was talking about you and I being the "illegals".

Why the US government doesn’t want to solve the immigration problem… because they provide a substantial amount of income (profit) with no liability, i.e. social security and Medicare as well as the IRS. Illegal’s will get no social security and no Medicare when they retire nor do they file for a refund from the IRS, because they are paying into fake social security numbers. The money that the employers pay in for them goes into a trust fund called the Earnings Suspense File. Read the following articles if you are interested or just google Earnings Suspense File and do the research yourself.

I think the issue here is "illegal". They are here without permission. Plain and simple. Even when our ancestors came over from wherever, they had to sign at Ellis Island or go through immigration.
---
It depends what your ancestry is, because I know that none of the Pilgrims that came off the Mayflower signed the book at Ellis, and I'm pretty sure Columbus and his crew didn't either... I guess we can thank the Native Americans for letting us illegals into their country.

I think the issue here is "illegal". They are here without permission. Plain and simple. Even when our ancestors came over from wherever, they had to sign at Ellis Island or go through immigration. It isn't personal. America is a land of laws. I follow them to the best of my ability. I realize it's expesive but oh well. Welcome to the real world. Life is expensive here in the US. Illegals come here expecting to get something for nothing. I have no dental insurance for me or my family and yet some illegals sign up for welfare and get it all. And don't deny it because it's the truth. I makes me very angry when my tax dollars go towards making sure illegals are healthy and have perfect teeth when my family struggles just to make sure the bills (including medical) get paid. You feed your family first then you can feed the neighborhood.
Fly to Tijuana, walk across, she will be in williston and good to go by tuesday ... and you above anyone should be calling Dorgan and Conrad complaining about IMMIGRATION. those rude people have supervisors... no one should be treated disrespectfully. call em on it !!!
Not really an option, but she is sitting right next to me here in Portland as I type... plus she's Canadian. It's not that easy in our case as she is working here (legally) on an extension of her student visa, but her green card is pending.
Getting a green card is so difficult in this country, and it costs a ton of money, time, and energy whether they are married to an American citizen or not... It's no surprise there are so many people here "illegally".
My ex husband was born in Yugoslavia, then his family became Canadian citizens. We were married 7 years, got divorced in 2000 and he STILL does not have his green card! What we should have done is moved to ND for a year and applied up here. Arizona is so back logged it was immpossible. I have NEVER met more rude or incompitant people in my life than those that work for the INS. His file was lost SEVERAL times and at one point we were put under "investigation"....??? MANY interviews later, and a lot of bit@@ing on my part, and that fiasco was over, but we had lawyer fees up the @ss and nothing ever got accomplished. He is still here, but on a work visa. Good luck to you and your wife!

Dakotadj, just hearing the name Fienstine makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I don't know how you can stand living there! Good luck getting anything done with them in office!
Wow, what doesn't make the hair on your neck stand up?
BTW: This thread makes me want to vommit.
My wife and I have dealt with immigration time and time again, and the excessively rude guards always seem to not know what the hell is going on. My wife is currently in the process of getting her green card which is another ridiculous fiasco.

And its our job to force our government to stop them.. Can I sneak across the montana border and haul some hay bales back to williams county from some ranchers field.....Can I come to North Dakota and drive around your state without a license, work for cash, send it back to my home and expect you guys to pick up the tab for my medical and education for my kids.... OH thats right, I have to follow the law and register for a new drivers license after being in your state for a determined amount of time..
IT is NOT our problem mexico is corrupt, and they advocate and teach thier people how to avoid immigration officials.. I don't care how hard it is to make a living in mexico, Not at the expense of small children in America who go without, people who would have these jobs IF THEY paid a wage....
Go to Mexico and live, see what rules they have AND ENFORCE !! aint no gringo gonna be sneakin over and livin high off the hog on his American retirement without toeing the line... Illegal immigration for mexico is probably one of the top three sources of economic revenue.. AT YOUR and MY EXPENSE !!!
I"m taking bets, I've emailed and called Dorgan and Conrad regarding immigration more than the people who view this site.. Being a Native North Dakodan, the complacent attitude bothers me. Without the Midwest, let me rephrase that. without ALL the states joining togethere with the southwest states, were in for deep Kim-shee !!
I'm glad to hear the process is not easy. That's the way it should be. Thanks for that info, Jyl.
I agree it is the greatest place on earth. But that could change if we're not careful.
The problem is, it is MUCH easier to jump the border than go thru immigration. It is a costly, time consuming process. Things these people don't feel they have. Hense, the immigration issue.

Could we possibly look at the Statue of Liberty in the same light as the Trojan Horse? Maybe the French had a grand scheme when they gifted that to us? Give that damn peice of rock back!
I'm certainly no isolationist, though I creep closer and closer to that everytime I see illegals marching and acting against our government.
And just to clear some things up...
1. if they commit a crime, ship their arses back? Uhhh, they already have committed a crime, they entered our country illegally. So we better start shipping. 2. Why should legal Americans have to pay the price for their defunct government? (I know this is going to bring up an Iraq statement....ugh) When Americans feel their government isn't working for them and may be corrupt we don't go running to Canada.....ok...so most of us don't.
Has anyone on this post ever delt with the immigration office? I have an it wasn't a fun experience! How easy do you think it is for a Mexican national to enter our country legally? Not very easy I would have to say. It sometimes takes YEARS to get approval. Some countries have a "lottery" ,for those lucky enough to get picked, they get to come to "the land of the free". I can't blame anyone for wanting to live here, in my opinion there is no better place on earth. The opportunities are endless.

Dakotadj, just hearing the name Fienstine makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I don't know how you can stand living there! Good luck getting anything done with them in office!
