Jib, leave it to you "bleeding heart" liberals to make something like the world Olympics into a political issue. Did you ever stop to think of how the Olympics bring us all together? All Nations are there for one reason...to compete and have fun. And from what I've seen on so called "global news" has been anything but peaceful protesting. I see 'ol Clinton is calling for a veto on the Olympics from THE USA...I say NEVER!! Do you actually think that if the US doesn't show for the Olympics that China won't either? Or that these protests are going to change those ruling China? Just stop and think for a moment my friend, how will boycotting the Olympics help things? It didn't help Russia. Peacesmile

Clinton and Obama are not calling for the USA to "veto" the olympics, they just want Mr. Bush (not the atheletes) to not show up for the opening ceremony for a fundamental reason. Besides, the Olympics is an excellent stage to make actions and voices heard, what other event captures viewers from virtually every nation on our planet?

I agree 100% with your statement that the Olympics bring the world together... which is why it is a great place to raise awareness of social injustice of human beings within the very country that is hosting the "games".

What if the 2004 Olympics were being hosted in Kabul, Afghanistan... would you feel differently?

Ah SKM, the world is much too large to just focus on only one of God's creatures (humans). Have you not been reading your global news this year? Buddhist monks marching/protesting injustices in Myanmar and Tibet, and recently the citizens of San Francisco fundamentally protesting the injustice of the Tibettan nation with the arrival of the Olympic torch...

The reason why I said something about it is because I seen on Fox NEWS that one of the female "teachers" was let off her probation early due to "good behavior" (talk about an oxymoron) and that she'd completed her community service early.  It just set me off!  It just makes me sooo angry when any adult abuses a youngster and gets a slap on the wrist for it.  I apoligize, I should have been more clear on why I was so ticked and why I was posting it.  But Ran and Brandy your both right.  It just this type of thing drives me crazy and then we have people protesting a circus. weirdface It just seems like everything is so backwards!  I believe people should always come first then we can take on animal issues.  Thanks for letting me rant. smile

I am not sure why women seem to get off easier than men?  And do we know that they do get off easier?  If they do I dont think it has anything to do with the teenagers willingness at all.  How clearly does a teenager think at any age?  It does not give the adult the right to invade a person just because the teenager was willing!  I think its just because when a woman does it when she is a Public figure (so to speak) that it draws media attention.  I am guessing there are lots of women abusers out there that we never even hear of becasue they are not teachers and such.  Also I hear of lots of local cases where the male gets off with little punishment.  It all comes down to the judge and or jury.

I may be way off the mark on this...so I will expect some criticism on my thoughts.

First, anyone who abuses a child should pay dearly for it. Man or Woman. While there are documented and highly publicised cases of women, a woman isn't the first image that jumps into minds when the word pedophile is mentioned.

These female teacher/student relationships that come up every so often IMHO are different than that of the male teacher/student relationship. I have read where the female teachers are doing so (in most cases) to regain part of a childhood that they feel was lost (due to something stressfull, like abuse, or just having a crappy childhood). If you take a hormonal enough teenage boy, and a cute female teacher...well...your will end up on the evening news.

Do not get me wrong, I am not in anyway condoning this activity. I just think that part of the reason that women get off easier has do to with whether there is pattern of them taking advantage of young teens, and the teens willingness to partake in the 'relationship.'

I am not sure if these are these type of instances that Shayla is refering to, but this may be one or two reasons why these type of cases do not have as harsh of penalties as opposite sex ones do....

Did something happen I am not aware of or are we talking about Mary Kay Laterno (sp) and that other lady?  Did I miss something?

There sure have been a lot of these cases lately, something like within the past three or four years. It seems like they certainly get off lightly compared to the opposite gender. I can't remember any such cases locally. It could have, and I simply missed the report. Although I do recall a couple of rumors about certain teacher-student relationships, I don't think any made the papers, at least, that I saw with my own eyes.

I for one do NOT believe that women who have sex with our young sons should be given a less senction (sp) than men who do the same thing to our your girls!!    I believe women should serve years in prison and if and when they get out they should HAVE TO resgister as a Sex OFFENDER!!   Equal Rights MEANS...EQUAL!!!   These teachers who are molesting our boys need to GO TO JAIL!!!!!!
